Mental Health Treatment Plans

Access counselling and therapy through Medicare with a GP referral

What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) is a plan developed by your GP that allows you to access Medicare-subsidised sessions with an eligible mental health professional. It is one of the most common ways Australians access affordable counselling and therapy.

Once your GP has assessed your needs and prepared the plan, you can be referred to an eligible mental health professional. At Nautical Minds Fraser Coast, services are provided by an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW), with eligible sessions attracting a Medicare rebate.

Key points

  • Requires a referral from your GP
  • Up to 10 subsidised sessions per calendar year
  • Medicare rebate applies to eligible sessions
  • Available face-to-face or via telehealth

How It Works

Getting started is straightforward. Here's what to expect.

1

Visit Your GP

Book an appointment with your GP and discuss how you have been feeling. Be open about your mental health concerns — your GP is there to help.

2

GP Prepares Your Plan

Your GP will assess your needs and prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan. This usually takes a longer appointment, so let the receptionist know when booking.

3

Receive Your Referral

Your GP can send your referral documents directly to Nautical Minds Fraser Coast, or provide them to you to bring to your first appointment.

4

Begin Your Sessions

You can access up to 10 individual Medicare-subsidised sessions per calendar year. We will work with you on your goals and wellbeing.

Medicare Rebates

Under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, eligible clients may receive a Medicare rebate of $89.50 for eligible sessions at Nautical Minds Fraser Coast. Your out-of-pocket cost will depend on the session fee and applicable Medicare rebate.

Medicare rebate amounts are set by the Australian Government and may change.
