Workplace Stress & Burnout

Support for managing workplace pressure, burnout, and work-related stress

Workplace stress can build slowly or hit all at once — leaving you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or not quite like yourself. When pressure becomes constant or the environment feels difficult to navigate, it’s common to notice the effects spilling into your mood, sleep, relationships, and overall wellbeing. Many people reach out when they realise they’re carrying more than they can manage on their own.

Work-related stress can arise from a range of factors including high workloads, role demands, difficult workplace relationships, lack of support, or ongoing exposure to conflict or emotionally demanding environments. Many people also notice that stress shows up physically — through tension, fatigue, headaches, or feeling constantly “on alert.”

Common experiences may include:

  • Feeling mentally or emotionally exhausted
  • Difficulty switching off after work
  • Increased irritability or reduced patience
  • Loss of motivation or sense of purpose
  • Feeling overwhelmed by workload or expectations
  • Sleep difficulties linked to work stress
  • Anxiety or dread related to work
  • Feeling stuck, trapped, or unsupported in your role
  • Physical tension, fatigue, or feeling the stress in your body

Ongoing workplace stress can affect both the mind and body. Many people notice impacts on energy levels, concentration, mood, physical health, relationships, and overall quality of life.

I have written more about workplace stress, burnout, and how prolonged stress can affect the nervous system in When Workplace Stress Turns Into Burnout and Why Burnout and Trauma Feel Similar in the Body.

Areas I commonly support:

  • Burnout and emotional exhaustion
  • Workplace stress and overwhelm
  • Workplace bullying or conflict
  • High workload and performance pressure
  • Difficult workplace relationships or environments
  • Work-life balance difficulties
  • Career stress and adjustment difficulties
  • Emotional impacts of ongoing work-related pressure

When work-related stress begins to significantly affect daily functioning, it may also involve workplace processes, healthcare providers, and return-to-work planning.  In these situations, coordinated support can be helpful.

Practical support and documentation (in conjunction with your GP)

In some situations, work-related stress or psychological difficulties may significantly impact day-to-day functioning and capacity to work. Where appropriate, we can support you to explore and make sense of your situation and encourage a discussion with your GP regarding medical certificates, WorkCover processes, and/or return-to-work planning if needed.

A supportive, evidence-based approach

Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to explore what is happening at work, understand its impact, and develop strategies to manage stress, improve coping, and support overall wellbeing.

My approach is person-centred, trauma-informed, and evidence-based, drawing from approaches such as:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
  • Stress management and emotional regulation strategies
  • Body‑based and somatic strategies to support nervous system regulation and reduce the physical impacts of stress
  • Strengths-based and biopsychosocial approaches

If this feels relevant to what you’re experiencing, you’re welcome to book an appointment online via our homepage, or reach out by phone or enquiry form if you’d like to ask any questions first.
